Mushroom Burger Experiment

In this experiment, I wanted to see whether or not people at a fast food restaurant would be more likely to buy vegan burgers than meat-based burgers. I chose Mushroom Burger because it is a holistic fast-food restaurant focusing on veganism and vegetarianism.

The experiment went as follows: for 10 minutes, I went up to 10 people in the restaurant and asked if they would like to try my mushroom burger with organic fries and organic berry lemonade with an ingredient list of vegan lettuce, tempeh bacon, maitake mushrooms, carrots, broccoli rabe pesto sauce with toasted pine nuts.

In each case of asking the question, I had different responses ranging from no response to minor confusion on their part to, in one case, a “yes” response.

What’s the Difference Between a Burger and a Mushroom Burger?

A burger is a meat patty served between two pieces of bread. A mushroom burger can be made with different mushrooms: portobello, shiitake, oyster, or regular button.

The Portobello Mushroom Burger

The Portobello was the type of mushroom I had chosen to use in my experiment. The portobello is the most popular type of mushroom in the United States. It is a meaty mushroom with a firm outer covering, and under the cap, it has a slimy center that is white and indented.

Cooking Tips for Perfect Mushroom Burgers

1. Start with a good recipe. The success of your mushroom burgers will depend on the quality of the recipe you choose. Pay attention to reviews and ratings to select a tasty option you’ll enjoy making time and time again.

2. Select the right mushroom. Whether you’re using portobello mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, or buttons, choose fresh and firm varieties to ensure they have maximum flavor and texture in your finished dish.

3. Cook mushrooms slowly and gently. Sauté mushrooms to give them a deeper flavor, or grill over low heat to create a smoky taste. Mushrooms cook quickly, so turn them frequently to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.

4. Don’t over-process the burger patty ingredients. If you’re making your mushroom burgers, use a food processor for a few pulses, then combine all the ingredients by hand for an evenly textured burger.

5. Save the mushroom stems for later. If you’re using portobello or shiitake mushrooms for your burger, save the stems for future recipes such as soups, pasta, and more.

6. Use mushrooms to make a perfect vegan burger bun. Portobello mushroom caps can be baked and sliced into burger buns that fit perfectly around your savory patty.

FAQ

Can you use wild mushrooms to make a vegan burger?

Unfortunately, most wild mushrooms are not suitable for consumption. The mushroom industry is highly regulated and requires that all cultivated mushrooms are grown in sterile conditions free of chemical or pesticide contamination. So unfortunately, even if you find a wild variety of the mushroom you want to eat, the chances of getting contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria from the field are extremely low.
Wild mushrooms are fun to find and explore and almost always require a professional mycologist’s advice before they can be safely eaten.

What’s the best way to cook a mushroom burger?

There are many ways to cook a mushroom burger. However, grilling will produce the best results. The reason is that grilled mushrooms have more flavor than other cooking options like sauteing or pan-frying. Grilled mushrooms also cook faster than many other types of food.
Some people prefer pan-fried mushrooms because it’s a good way to add an extra layer of crispy texture. Pan-frying is also the only way to make stuffed mushroom burgers like Portobello burgers or Swiss mushroom burgers. This cooking method creates a crunchy texture on the outside while keeping the inside soft and juicy.
